Is this movie actually scary? I'm interested in it. It seems more in the vein of "The Craft" than other horror movies. And I love The Craft. =D

Ha... You asked the wrong person. I'm the king of liking movies that aren't 'scary.'
Anyway, it's really smart and subversive and damn well-made. I suggest you rent it immediately.

Ginger Snaps is, without doubt, the best "teenage girl turning into a werewolf" film ever made. Katherine Isabelle gets progressively hotter as things go on and even odd-looking Emily Perkins has a couple of camera angles where she looks like Sarah Michelle Gellar. I just bought the OOP DVD version from ebay for $4.99 rather than the Canadian "Collector's Edition" which is often ridiculously priced.
It's not scary in any way but it's really well done. I don't think a lot of people even see it as a horror movie and, according to polls, most of the intended female audience love Ginger Snaps but have no desire to watch other movies from the horror genre.
I suppose the best way to describe Ginger Snaps is as a "coming of age" movie with lycanthropy as a kind of metaphor for puberty (even though it's more than just a metaphor in this case). It has elements of "Carrie" but it's vastly different.
The sequels are another thing entirely. Ginger Snaps 2 is just an outright horror movie with very little subtext and Ginger Snaps 3 was an ambitious project which didn't really work due to the budget and turgid (some would say boring) storyline.
Apart from Decoys, Ginger Snaps is still my favourite Canadian movie of all time.

I just bought the OOP DVD version from ebay for $4.99 rather than the Canadian "Collector's Edition" which is often ridiculously priced. I got mine for $15.70. Worth every penny of that price, I'll tell ya. (they only rarely have copies, but Caiman.com is where I got mine, they also sell on Amazon.com - last I ordered from them) www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0000700KP/ref=dp_olp_new?ie=UTF8&condition=newMovieMars has a copy for only $21.30. Even at that price, I seriously doubt we'll ever see a special edition in America. And the special features are amazing. I personally wish there had been more interviews with the actors, but the two audio commentaries are packed with information! It's not scary in any way What horror movie is scary?
