This post is an investigation of New Line DVD's famous Nightmare Encyclopedia bonus disc's Labyrinth maze, to show you where all the extras are that you don't have access to on the Index menu. Let's see if we can't figure this thing out together.
This is Main Hallway 1 (my nickname . You get here after you click on "Labyrinth" in the Index menu and go through the animation of Nancy's house. What this really is is the high school in the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie- though technically, you see it in parts 2 and 4 as well.
Now, don't bother with the ? in the circle. That will lead you nowhere. They put that in there to make this look like a game. It's not really, it's just a cool DVD menu. It's even kinda creepy in a way. There are only 2 arrows. Don't bother with the Down arrow. It never leads you anywhere but back to the Main Index. But then, the Up arrow only leads you to the next Hallway.
This is Main Hallway 2. Here, you'll find 3 new arrows: Up, Left, and Right.
This Right arrow goes to a Locker Room / Bathroom section:
You can see 3 different objects light up for each locker, 2 handles and 1 lock-hole. Each of them will give you a different little piece of Freddy fun. But, there's a bit of a CHEAT TRICK you want to know. Do you see the Key on the floor?
DON'T pick it up right away. Because if you do, 2 of the videos that you get from the objects you can click on will be gone and then to see those videos again, you'll have to start the Labyrinth over again, by going to the very first Index menu... That's work. Who want's that? If you want to see all the Labyrinth-only extras, don't pick up the key just yet.
Instead, click on either of the two locker door handles for these video clips:
The first is a promotional gag for Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. Of which, you'll find another 5 or 6 throughout the Labyrinth. I'll show you all of them. This one has Freddy holding the "dream pram" (a word that basically means: fancy baby carriage) and yacking about it. I think there is another clip later that features the pram, this one is different in that he mentions cooing his baby with a "death rattle." The second clip features Freddy yacking in a white silhouette against a black screen. Here, he tries to convince the audience that even though they can't see him, they know who he is. If I had to guess... I would say this is from his Mtv appearence to promote Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.
Now that you've seen those two, you can pick up the key. When you have, the first 2 videos change and become these:
The new first video is one of several clips you'll find here of Freddy sitting in a room on Mtv, introducing music videos that would have played on the channel back in 1987. The video he seems to be introducing is Los Lobos' "Shakin' Shakin' Shakes." Unfortunately, I can't find a link on YouTube, but he also mentions Spinal Tap. Which is a band, but it's also that 1984 comedy spoof movie about hard rock bands and their silly antics on the road / backstage. The second video is another Mtv clip, and features him in a locker room talking. There are a good 3 more maybe videos of this sequence further in the maze, and I'll show you all of them. This one has Freddy talking about what scares him: "falling asleep and waking up on a jet bound for Daytona with the Beastie Boys."
Then, you'll get a 5th video by clicking on the lock-hole next to the 2 door handles. This video is the same whether the key is on the floor or not:
This is a very short clip behind-the-scenes of Dream Child, the scene where Freddy and Yvonne are in the water tower room. Robert Englund in full Freddy makeup and costume notices the video camera and jokes around: "I'm one of the things you can catch in a hot tub." The woman next to him to me doesn't look like the actress playing Yvonne, Kelly Jo Minter. Instead, she looks like a stunt woman or diver. I can't tell.
And, that's it for the Locker Room / Bathroom. Time to move on. Now that you have the Key, you can get into one of the later sections of the Labyrinth without going back to the beginning. Click on the Down arrow to go back to Main Hallway 2.
If you click on the Left arrow, you'll be taken to the Morgue Door. To get in, here's what you do... First move your clicker or DVD remote to the panel next to the door on the left side and click on the tiny Light Switch in the middle. You'll see it, it lights up like this:
What this does is it turns the light on inside the Morgue. I know, you can see that for yourself. But the reason I mention it is - you can't move inside the Morgue without the light on first. The Labyrinth won't let you. Then, you open the door. Which... as you may have guessed... you accomplish simply by clicking on the door handle which an arrow points the way to:
From here, an Up arrow leads you inside. Click on it, or if you want to get out of here, click on the Down arrow (obviously). Now, you're in the Morgue and can move around since the light's on. You will see 5 new arrows (other than Down, to go back, obviously). Let me tell you right now, don't click on the arrow that points to the overhead lamp. It does nothing other than show you a kooky little computerized animation of the corpse you see in the center of the screen and plays electrocution sound effects. It's lame, skip it.
Now, here's what you need to know- all these arrows only lead to 2 video clips that aren't in the Index. Here's how you get them.... The Corpse arrow and the Right arrow take you to videos that are already in the Index. Where you wanna go first is the Clipboard:
As you can see, there are 2 clickable clips. The first is one in the Index. The one you want is under "Date of Death: 10/31/84." Highlight it and click the scribble that shows up. What you get is this:
What this is is another of the Mtv room clips. And it's a behind-the-scenes outtake of Robert Englund practicing one of his lines and swearing under his breath. Here, the original line was: "Remember when your Mommy said, 'don't sit too close to the tv set...'?" / Now, click on the Down arrow and you'll get back to the Morgue.
From here, click on the Left arrow, and that will take you to this Green Wall panel where what you want to click is the Circular Clock panel next to the big vat/vault. This is what you get:
Another Mtv clip and another outtake, with Robert Englund talking to himself. This one's a winner because he actually mentions in his normal speaking voice Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. I really didn't know he was a household name back then. / Now, get out of there. When you get to the Morgue room, click Down again. Now, you're back at the Morgue Door. You're going to have to click Down two times to get out- the first time just closes the door, second time takes you back to Main Hallway 2. When you get to Main Hallway 2, just clip the Up arrow. This will take you to Main Hallway 3:
In Main Hallway 3, there are 2 new arrows, Left and Up. Let's go Up first:
This takes you to a new door and 2 new arrows, Up and Left. Skip Left, ignore it completely. Click Up. Where this takes you is the school Basement Staircase. There's only one new arrow: Up (which in fact, takes you further downstairs). Click it. That will take you here, to this door:
You may be pleased to now hear dialogue from Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors as you stand here. It's Nancy, Kincaid, and Kristen in the really creepy scene where a door appears out of nowhere. "It's a door," "but it doesn't go anywhere," "...yes it does." Great little scene. Anyway, you want to get in this door. Here's how: you see in the pic above how one of the 3 Pressure Gauge panels is lit up? Click it, the white shaded area. What happens next is that the little bulb on top turns red (ala- Ghostbusters). Do the same for the 3rd Gauge. Then, move to the arrow in front of the Door and click it.
The Door will now open and an Up arrow will appear. Click it. This takes you, rather obnoxiously, to another pathway with only 1 new arrow, Forward. Click it. This takes you into the middle of the Basement main room and gives you 3 new arrows. Ignore the Right arrow.
Where you want to click first is the Left arrow, which takes you to a wall of 4 framed pictures.
Naturally, you can click on all of them. The one you want to ignore is the pic of Tina in the bodybag from the first movie. The other 3 are Labyrinth-only clips:
The first clip, in the middle on top - Debbie being transformed into a roach, is one of the Dream Child promotional gags. Here, Freddy makes a crack about Greta's death. The second clip, in the middle on bottom - Nancy's old house boarded up, is another of the Mtv promos with Freddy in the locker room. Here... he just laughs for about 10 seconds. The third clip, Freddy on the left, is a killer slideshow Photo Gallery that runs a full minute with exclusive and very cool pictures from all over the series. Including set building stuff, make-up sessions, props, monsters, etc(.) from all 7 of the movies. I believe there are 2 more of these (with different photos) later in the Labyrinth.
Click the Down arrow to get out. Now that you're that back in the Basement main room- click on the Up arrow. This will take you to a chair with a sidetable and on that is a Scrapbook. Click on the Diagonal arrow, it will take you to a closeup of the Scrapbook.
From here, click the Right arrow on the right edge of the Scrapbook. Once inside, you will end up flipping through about 7 pages of menu pages (keep clicking the Right arrow that shows up on the right side). When you reach this page:
STOP! That's where the next Photo Gallery sideshow is. Click on the 2nd photo in the row of 4 (of Freddy and a flirtacious woman in a silky slip-dress) and ignore all the others.
