Did anyone else think that the end of Roseanne really made the series something special or did you think it was too contrived?

I would never say "contrived." Because I know how much of herself Roseanne put into it. She is really passionate about the family and the characters and you can tell she was in her very touching performance in that episode.
If anything, it was just a colossal downer after 9 seasons of watching that family suffer through various hardships. No other sitcom family seemed to have it harder most of the time. Them winning the lottery was like the greatest thing that could happen to most blue-collar, middle class extended families. And I'm just really disappointed that "it never happened." But I understand Roseanne's reasons for it and she makes a good argument. As a writer, anything she didn't like- she changed. That, though disappointing, is still a damn sight better than the whole thing having been a dream.
At least we knew all along that she wanted to be a writer. They set that up in the first and second seasons. Though, they dropped it in the 3rd season toward the beginning. And didn't mention it again until "First Cousin, Twice Removed" in season 5 and... I don't know the 8th season that well, but between the episodes where she got the TV commentary job and when Dan and her had the fight about him sneaking junk food after having the heart attack.
